What to do in the event of a bomb threat.

While a majority of bomb threats turn out to be hoaxes, they must be taken seriously until a complete assessment and any search is complete.

Bomb Threat (phone)

Any person receiving a bomb threat should remain calm and attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the caller-have a Bomb Threat Record available and write down details while they are fresh in your mind. Call the police (2222 or 9-1-1 off campus) immediately afterwards and follow instructions. Click on the link at the bottom of the page to download a form to fill out in the event of a bomb threat over the phone.

Bomb Threat (written)

Any person receiving a written bomb threat should save all materials (envelope, container, letter) and call police (2222 or 9-1-1 off campus) immediately. Avoid further handling of the material to preserve fingerprints, handwriting/typewriting, postage marks and other items of value.

Evacuation

Any decision to evacuate a building based on a threat will be made by an appropriate official in consultation with University Police. If a partial or full building evacuation is ordered, people should go to a predetermined location a safe distance away and await further instructions. Unit emergency plans should include evacuation announcements, routes to be taken from the building, location for staging, criteria for return and roles of key personnel.

Suspicious Object

Any person discovering a suspicious object or potential bomb should clear the area and call police (2222 or 9-1-1 off campus) for instructions.
