What steps are being taken to protect the campus community from terrorism?

For many years the UAPD has provided a variety of protective services to the campus community, and additional steps have been taken since the terrorist attacks in 2001. While it is impossible to foresee all contingencies, campus units with response obligations have emergency plans that are frequently reviewed and strengthened in response to any new concerns. Much of this activity is coordinated through the Emergency Planning Committee and additional support is provided by Building Executives across campus. As has always been the case, members of the campus community play a key role and a great deal of additional resource material is available on the Homeland Security/Campus Safety Information Index Page.

What is expected of students, faculty and staff toward protecting the campus community?

Everyone is asked to follow heightened awareness guidelines and err on the side of caution by reporting any suspicious activity, following safety/security protocols and becoming familiar with emergency plans.

What does the color-coded national threat level mean to our campus?

The Homeland Security Advisory System is designed to raise awareness and categorize the terrorism threat level on a national scale, with progressively stringent protective measures recommended accordingly. Campus law enforcement officials are connected to state and federal agencies that share information and any known threat to the UA campus or surrounding community will be communicated in a timely fashion. As a matter of standard procedure, the UAPD will operate in accordance with the Homeland Security Advisory System at a minimum and exceed steps deemed appropriate at that level if credible threats involving the campus community are realized.

What resources are available to me for workplace and/or personal emergency planning?

Emergency planning material from campus units and external organizations is available via links on the Homeland Security/Campus Safety Information Index Page.

What should I do if I receive what appears to be a terrorist threat?

Any threat of bodily harm, damage to facility assets and/or other criminal behavior should be directed to the emergency dispatch center at 9-1-1. For further guidelines and checklist to record important information click here.

Where can I go to get accurate information about current threats, if any, and any rumors?

Information about the national threat level via Office of Homeland Security, as well as any alerts more specific to the UA campus area, can be found on the UAPD web page. If deemed appropriate threat information will be communicated throughout the campus community via emergency call lists and/or e-mail.

How will any urgent messages be disseminated to the campus community?

Timely notices regarding threats or any other concerns will be sent through a combination of emergency call lists, e-mail, web page and/or word of mouth in a designed manner.

What is the process for getting official approval for assemblies, rallies and other public events on campus?

To help ensure the safety of participants and the public there is an approval process for events that are envisioned to reach a certain size and scope. For outside events, space can be formally reserved via the Physical Plant and Building Executives can be contacted for space inside buildings.
