Bike Patrol OfficersUA Police is happy to have the opportunity to patrol its jurisdiction with specialized bicycle officers. These are police officers that will occasionally take a bike on patrol instead of a car. Sgt. Matt Mills supervises the bicycle officer program and assures that each officer has the necessary training and skills to serve the public. We have found the bike officers are effective in crime prevention patrol, discovering crimes in progress, bicycle and pedestrian violation enforcement and community relations. The versatility of a bike makes it an invaluable tool for officers. In 2003, UAPD utilized approximately 1300 hours of bike and foot patrol.

Our bicycle officers are individually selected and then undergo specialized training on the safe operation of bicycles in extreme circumstances.

While on patrol a bike officer can expect to respond to the same variety of calls as a patrol officer in a car. Many times the bike officer may arrive first because they can get through traffic easier than a patrol car. Bike officers are great examples of the level of community involvement we encourage.

University of Arkansas police officers are certified officers and have jurisdiction to enforce local, state and federal laws as well as Campus Rules and Regulations. The department employs a 24-hour staff of trained police officers and strongly encourages reporting of all criminal activity. For suggestions and comments, please contact Lt. Mike Burrus.
